Kits vs single vials: when the bigger pack is cheaper
A kit of ten vials often costs less per mg than a single vial — but not always. How to tell, with worked examples. · 3 Oct 2026
Many vendors sell the same vial on its own and in kits of 3, 5 or 10. The kit has a bigger price tag and, very often, a lower price per milligram. Very often is not always, though, and the difference can go either way.
Compare the kit and the single vial per mg
Take a compound sold in 10 mg vials, at one vendor:
| Listing | Price | Total amount | Price per mg |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 vial of 10 mg | $50 | 10 mg | $5.00 |
| Kit of 5 × 10 mg | $225 | 50 mg | $4.50 |
| Kit of 10 × 10 mg | $400 | 100 mg | $4.00 |
Here the 10-vial kit is 20% cheaper per mg than the single vial. On any PepSpotter comparison you can choose the quantity — 1, 3, 5 or 10 vials — and see what each vendor charges for exactly that quantity.
When a kit is not cheaper
- The kit price is just the single price times the count. Some stores list kits with no saving at all. Then the kit only means buying more vials at once.
- Another vendor's single vial beats this vendor's kit. The cheapest kit is not always cheaper than the cheapest single vial elsewhere. Compare across vendors, not only within one store.
- The single vial is on sale. A sale can make the single vial cheaper per mg than the kit for a while. PepSpotter shows the price the listing charges now; the regular price is on the vendor's page.
Stock matters more for kits
Kits sell out separately from single vials, and a kit that is out of stock is not a price you can pay. PepSpotter shows stock beside every listing, and you can hide everything that is out of stock with one switch.
A bigger pack is only cheaper if you use it
A lower price per mg only counts if the whole kit gets used. If ten vials is more than your research needs before the expiry date the vendor states, the difference is money spent on vials that go unused. Check the storage conditions and expiry on the vendor's page before choosing the bigger pack.
Shipping can change the answer
Shipping is charged per order, not per vial. A kit often reaches a vendor's free-shipping threshold where a single vial does not, which widens the kit's advantage. The reverse happens too: a cheap single vial can end up dearer once shipping is added. PepSpotter's prices leave shipping out, so check the total at the vendor's checkout.
